The American Form of Government
Many Americans would be surprised to learn that the word "democracy" does not appear in the Declaration of Independence or the US Constitution.
Follow up:
Yeah we lose sight of this little fact. We are a republic. We use a democratic process to put key players into prominent positions in the republic, but we don't go by "majority rule" if the majority decides something against the rules is okay. Thus we were able to end slavery despite the popularity of that practice at the time, ensure a woman's right to seek and get an abortion despite the seeming unpopularity of letting someone else decide about their own health care, and very soon marriage will be a union of two adults instead of the historically popular "gotta be different genders" view.
